After finding a passenger's backpack left in his car, a Boston taxi driver turned in $187K worth of cash to the police.

"That's the way I was brought up. I was told to do the right thing," the cab driver, 72-year-old Raymond MacCausland stated.

MacCausland dropped the passenger off at his destination at Massachusetts Avenue and Tremont Street near Northeastern University's campus on Friday afternoon. According to the Boston Police Department, MacCausland noticed the bag filled with cash lying in the backseat.

MacCausland recalled that about a mile into the trip, the passenger requested that he stop the vehicle and wait outside a motel for five minutes. After half an hour passed and the passenger did not return, MacCausland became concerned. "He entered the motel and asked the front desk about the man, but the workers claimed to have never seen him," MacCausland reported to CNN. He then returned to his cab when he found the bag and the cash.

The cab driver immediately brought the bag to the police headquarters. The authorities later received a call from the passenger as they were taking inventory of the bag's contents, police stated. The police returned the bag full of cash to its proper owner once he arrived at the station and provided the authorities with proof of ownership.

"This hackney driver exhibited exemplary behavior and his honest deed should be recognized," said Williams Evans, Boston Police Department Commissioner. "His actions represent the high standards that our department has for our drivers."

The money belonged to a homeless man who had just cashed in his inheritance, according to the Boston Police. CNN also reported that "when Boston police asked the man whether he would like to reward MacCausland, he gave the driver a $100 bill. "I get that much for returning a lost wallet," MacCausland stated.
