In the last decade, Aronofsky has proven himself to be one of the more diverse and most compelling filmmakers in the game. His adaptation of Requiem for a Dream earned him some serious acclaim with his controversial exploration of the depths one falls into when driven by addiction and desperation, which was lauded for its direction and editing.
On the slightly less controversial side, the director gave audiences The Wrestler, focusing on an aging performer who has nowhere else to go but small-town conventions in hopes of cashing in on the glory he was once recognized for around the world. The film earned star Mickey Rourke an Oscar nomination, with many audiences feeling as though he was snubbed for the best performance of his career.
Another film in the director’s filmography that harkened back to his earlier and intense filmmaking styles was the psychological thrillerBlack Swan. In the film, Natalie Portman starred as a ballet dancer with the unique opportunity to demonstrate her skills in an incredibly difficult ballet, with the requirements taking a physical and mental toll on her, causing her to descend into madness in which she couldn’t discern reality from hallucinations.
Among Black Swan‘s many achievements, it scored five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Portman took home the Oscar for her performance as the tortured dancer.
From what we’ve seen of mother! so far, it sure looks like he’s tapping into a straightforward horror film, which is sure to be filled with fantastic performances.
Mother! hits theaters on September 15.
