Jinhua Zoo’s newest baby gorilla just got named Harambe McHarambeface thanks to an online public poll that went awry.
The zoo held the online poll to let the internet choose the baby gorilla’s name, which of course wasn’t a good idea – because internet. Pranksters quickly hijacked the poll and won their choice name with 93 percent of the votes.

Even though the name Harambe McHarambeface is clearly a prank – a mash-up of Harambe and Boaty McBoatface, which won a public contest for the UK’s newest polar research vessel – Jinhua Zoo is still honoring the poll’s results and will name the baby gorilla accordingly. However, they have given the animal the Chinese name Heijin because Harambe McHarambeface doesn’t exactly translate.
Harambe was the 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla that was fatally shot at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into its enclosure. In the coming days, the internet took to making Harambe memes, which the Cincinnati Zoo wasn’t too happy about. And now we have a new baby gorilla being named Harambe McHarambeface.
The Philadelphia Zoo is also holding a contest to name their baby gorilla, but unlike the Jinhua Zoo contest, pollers won’t be able to write in their own entries. The Philadelphia Zoo has ruled out naming their baby gorilla Harambe or anything resembling it.
What would you name these baby gorillas?
