After 59 years of marriage, North Carolina couple Margaret and Don Livengood spent their final days holding hands side by side in the hospital before they eventually passed away within hours of one another.

“It was normal for them to be holding hands, their love was so precious,” Pattie Beaver, the couple’s daughter stated. “But it was the sweetest, most precious thing you can imagine to see them holding hands in the hospital.”

Both of Beaver’s parents were taken to the hospital on the same day. Margaret, 80, was suffering cancer while her Don, 84, was fighting for his every breath due to pulmonary fibrosis and bilateral pneumonia.

When Don and Margarat first arrived at the hospital, they were put in separate rooms on different floors. “It broke my heart,” Beaver said recalling how she would have to run back and forth from floor to floor to help her parents.

Beaver knew that they wanted to be together, so she pleaded with the hospital to put them in the same room.

Fortunately, Don and Margaret were both being treated by Dr. Randy Schisler, who claims that the staff truly came together in order to reunite the couple in the same hospital room.

“I’m really proud,” Dr. Schisler stated. “We stretched as far as we could with the rules to allow things that aren’t typical because it was the absolute right thing for these patients and for this family.”

Even though Beaver’s parents would eventually pass away on the same day, she said, “It gave me comfort to know that this is exactly what they would want and the hospital was able to make that happen.” Beaver continued, “In the most horrific grief I’ve ever had in my life, I still had comfort because they were together.”

On August 15, Margaret died around 8 a.m. while Don died later that day shortly after 5 p.m.

Before her parents passed, Beaver recalled some of the last words her father said to her mother. “When we get to heaven, we can walk in together, just like we’re getting married again. Another honeymoon.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pattie Beaver and family, and we appreciate her sharing this touching story.
