Ready! Fight! Or, rather – Film! The beloved Mortal Kombat franchise is yet again being adapted into a movie, and James Wan (Furious 7, Aquaman) has just given fans an update on the upcoming flick. Unsurprisingly, the director is saying the project’s crew is keen on not rushing the project.
Speaking with IGN, Wan said Mortal Kombat is “still cooking away.” He went on to say, “With that particular project, that’s a really cool property that I loved growing up as a kid. Besides the game, even the movies as well, I kind of enjoyed them for what they are.”

Having debuted back in 1992, Mortal Kombat stands as one of the most popular video game series of all-time. The violent game has of course been scrutinized for its explicit violence and gore, but no fatality could ever hope to finish the franchise. Shortly after the franchise’s creation, the first Mortal Kombat film was eventually released in 1995 and a second film entitled Annihilation was shot. A third film was then teased for awhile before it was eventuallykilled. But, thanks to the Mortal Kombat‘s recent resurgence, Wan’s film is now looking better than ever.
In his interview, Wan said he wanted to do Mortal Kombat justice as both a director and a fan. “The key here is to try and do it right. I don’t want to rush into it,” he explained. “Right now, we’re just trying to take our time to make sure it’s heading in the right direction. I think that’s more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.”
And, when asked about why he was drawn to the project, Wan gushed over his long-time love for the series. “I love the characters. I think they’re such colorful characters…This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that’s really fun to play with and so we’ll see.”
