FX Networks has begun developing the script for the long-rumored Mayans spinoff series taken from the Kurt Sutter biker drama Sons of Anarchy and will be given the title Mayans MC. The offshoot will be co-created by Sutter and Elgin James (Little Birds), and will be a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens,” per FX.
The Mayans were critical recurring players on Sons of Anarchy, and will be getting their own spinoff show after the series ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014. Sons of Anarchy was the highest-rated drama in FX Networks’ history, and Mayans MC will be looking to cash in the popularity of the original show.

Sutter followed SOA with the dark period drama called The Bastard Executioner, which ran for one season. Now Sutter and James are ready to return to the biker gang world with Mayans MC as James will be writing the pilot script and both will be producing, according to Deadline. Also, SOA studios Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions will be returning to be involved with Mayans MC.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter stated. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
Elgin James’ bio reads like that of one of the SOA characters. According to Deadline, “Homeless as a teenager, he was a fixture in Boston’s hardcore punk scene, helping found a multi-ethnic national street gang that targeted neo-Nazi skinheads and drug dealers. After spending a decade and a half in the gang, James left Boston for Los Angeles, where he entered the Sundance Institute Feature Film program.”
James will undoubtedly be bringing an entirely unique voice that will come from first hand experience, and should make for incredibly interesting story in the upcoming Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC.
