Community series creator, Dan Harmon, declared during a recent interview on Larry King Now that the NBC-turned-Yahoo Screen series “would make a great movie,” and that “it will happen.” Although he felt as though the movie will happen, he hesitated to lay out a specific timeline for a theatrical follow-up to the series.

“If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just for my own heart and mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it,” Harmon stated regarding the possibility of a future Community project. He continued by stating, “On the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say ‘we’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie,’ then I guess that’s a bad idea, too.”

Harmon’s uncertainty about what actors would be available to show up to make the movie comes from the fact that most of the actors are attached to other small-screen projects including: Joel McHale (CBS’ The Great Indoors), Gillian Jacobs (Netflix’s Love), Danny Pudi (NBC’s Powerless), Donald Glover (FX’s Atlanta), Yvette Nicole Brown (CBS’ The Odd Couple), Ken Jeong (ABC’s Dr. Ken), John Oliver (HBO’s Last Week Tonight), Jonathan Banks (AMC’s Better Call Saul) and Keith David (OWN’s Greenleaf).

Harmon told TVLine at San Diego Comic-Con last summer that the plan was to “wait a little bit, let [the cast] explore their awesome careers, and then we get together for an incredible movie.”
