San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick has made headlines again after sparking another controversy. At a pre-season game against Green Bay, he made the decision not to stand for the National Anthem. On Thursday he was photographed at practice wearing anti-police socks as another form of silent protest.

Mic‘s Phillip Lewis shared a picture on Twitter showing Kaepernick’s socks that depict officers as pigs, a long-standing insulting term for police. Lewis tweeted the photo with the caption, “Colin Kaepernick is now wearing socks depicting the police as pigs.”

Apparently Kaepernick has been wearing these type of socks since early in August, but the photos are just now making the rounds in light of the National Anthem incident. On August 12, Courtney Cronin of the Mercury News tweeted a photo of the NFL player wearing the same socks.

Kaepernick has been churning up the NFL news cycle ever since he informed reporters that the reason behind refusing to stand for the National Anthem was his reaction to racism and police brutality in the United States.

The 28-year-old backup told Steve Wyche of NFL.com: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Despite Kaepernick’s actions, 49ers head coach Chip Kelly says that the team plans to play him on Sunday in the team’s final pre-season game.
