Airport security is something none of us enjoy, at all. It takes forever. And people are rude. So, naturally having Adele and Ed Sheeran play during the security tango? Sold! Adele and Sheeran will be playing at a UK airport with the goal of making the experience much more bearable.

The London City Airport will will be the first to play a mixture of “ambient electronica and upbeat acoustic music” in the main security area. Two different playlists will be in rotation, chosen by music consultant C-burn. Adele, Jazon Mraz, and Ben Howard will be featured on the playlists, but staff and fliers seem to prefer Ed Sheeran.

According to Melanie Burnley, the airport’s Director of Customer Experience, fliers get from the front of the London City Airport to the departure lounge in about 20 minutes. Burnley was focused on making the security experience as enhanced as humanly possible. Dr Stephanie Bramley, an honorary research fellow in the psychology of music at the University of Sheffield, was even consulted on the project, stating background music may have a positive effect on passengers:

In an airport, playing music which is subtle, fits in with the overall ambience of the security search area, deemed to be familiar, and liked by passengers, might act as a positive distraction where passengers focus on the music instead of the time spent completing the security search process. The music at London City Airport may also enhance passenger experience by helping to create a pleasant environment and potentially improving their mood.

Would you want Adele, Ed Sheeran, or any other artist as background music while you went through airport security?
