2016 will forever be known as the year of the box office, and some are predicting that 2017 will find a way to top it. With movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Justice League, Beauty And The Beast, Fate Of The Furious, and Star Wars: Episode VIII set to hit theaters, it’s hard to imagine the box office taking any kind of dip.
That being said, there are plenty of films in 2017 that are set up to be enormous flops. We’re not talking about flops in terms of the possible quality of a film – as critical hatred towards Transformers likely won’t stop The Last Knight from raking in the dough – but rather the amount of money a movie will make.

When a ton of money is spent on a film, it’s expected that there will be a return. For the five films on this list, we worry that making back that amount will be a challenge.

The Great Wall
Here’s the thing – The Great Wall looks like an awesome movie. The controversy surrounding it – mixed with the enormous amount of money spent – has set it up to be a bomb.
The movie will probably do well in the international box office, but too many Americans are going to stay away from theaters because they see this as another white-washing.ย
To be honest, it’s going to be difficult for this movie to make its money back – no matter how good it is.

Boss Baby
Every year, there are a couple of animated movies that bomb in theaters. Either they are just a weird premise that people don’t care about, or they are beaten out by the Finding Dory‘s and Despicable Me‘s of the world.
Boss Baby looks to be an odd take on the classic Rugrats cartoons, with a tiny business executive at the head. The premise is oddly aimed at adults, with a marketing scheme and rating directed at children.
If you were wondering, that combination hardly ever works.

Underworld: Blood Wars
The Underworld movies have enjoyed enough success to stay alive all these years, but that train has slowly been derailing.
Aside from the fact that few people still follow this franchise with the kind of excitement that made it famous, Underworld hasn’t had a hit since the first film.
The longer this story is drawn-out, the less interest the world will have. Judging by the early reviews, Blood Wars is not going to do well. At all.

Smurfs: The Lost Village
Who knew another Smurfs movie was coming out this year? Aside from the cast and crew, we’re guessing almost no one.
The first two Smurfsย films were hardly successful in terms of box office revenue, with many fans only coming out for the first twoย because of Neil Patrick Harris landing the starring role.
From a critical standpoint, the entire franchise has been barely hanging on by the skin of its teeth.
Animation is expensive, and there are too many quality family movies in 2017 for The Lost Village to make a dent.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets
On paper, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is already being set up to fail. The premise is a grand space opera that people aren’t familiar with and – if Jupiter Ascending is any indication – fans have a hard time latching onto it.ย
Jupiter Ascending, however, did get help from the casting of mega-stars to helm the film. Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, and Eddie Redmayne put some butts in seats – even if they only managed a few.
Dane Dehaan is talented, but not someone audiences flock to, and many viewers are already more than sick of Cara Delevingne. Her off-camera attitude is starting to hurt her reputation, and her take on Echantress in Suicide Squad has left fans with a bad taste in their mouths.
With the incredible amount of money spent on the effects of Valerian – and the undoubtedly expensive appearance of Rihanna – it’s easy to see how the film will lose the most money of the entire year.
