While celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary, Betty and Bill Withers received an unexpected gift from a total stranger.
The couple, who married in 1950, were eating at their favorite restaurant called Tide’s Inn when they were treated to a pleasant surprise. Betty recalled telling the waitress, “It’s a special occasion for us.” She continued, “I said it’s our 66th wedding anniversary.”

Unbeknownst to the Withers, a nearby customer had been listening in on their conversation. Upon returning to the table, the waitress handed the couple a note from someone in the restaurant.
“It went on to say that the dinner was on him or her or whoever it was because there was no signature,” Betty stated. “I asked the waitress ‘are you kidding me?’ She said ‘no,’ I said, ‘can you tell me who did it?’ She said ‘No, I can’t tell you.’”
The waitress, named Jessica Cartner, was happy to be a part of the heartwarming gesture. Cartner mentioned that the generous stranger was adamant about remaining anonymous, which is always a sign that the person truly just wanted to do something nice and wasn’t concerned about the praise and recognition that comes with it.
According to Cartner, the other people eating dinner at the restaurant were taken aback by Bill and Betty’s evident devotion to one another.
“Well, there’s no such thing as a perfect marriage but we never had any real problems either. We’re still in love,” Bill said.
We’d like to commend this anonymous stranger on such a commendable act of kindness, and also congratulate Bill and Betty Withers on 66 years of marriage!
