New details have emerged in the accidental death of Miama Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

The athlete died from the impact of the crash, and did not drown, Lorenzo Veloz, a Florida Wildlife Commission official confirmed to USA Today.

Fernandez was not driving at the time of the collision. The 24-year-old was on the boat with two other individuals between the age of 24 and 27, whose names have not yet been released. The boat belonged to one of the other men.

The tragic accident happened sometime in the middle of the night after the Marlins game ended on Saturday night. Rescuers responded to the scene before 4 a.m.

Veloz reported that the 32-foot vessel was traveling at “what appeared to be full speed” when it struck a jetty.

“The vessel hit the rocks and capsized,” Veloz said. “It does appear speed was involved due to the impact and severity of it.”

The safety official added that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and no other illicit drugs were found on the scene, though toxicology reports have not been released.

Fernandez and his friends often took the boat out in that area, but Veloz is not surprised an accident could still occur under those conditions.

“The jetty is rocks, it’s not very visible,” Veloz said. “But we are aware that vessel has traveled several times through the area. Sometimes, at night, you deviate.”
