Netflix has picked up the global streaming rights to the FX hit series “American Crime Story.” The two companies inked their first licensing deal to put the first season of the show, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” on Netflix in 2017, according to Variety.
The subsequent seasons of the show will be available on Netflix after they’ve run on linear TV. All seasons of the show will available to Netflix subscribers everywhere, including the U.S., which will undoubtedly bring in a good chunk of additional revenue to 21st Century Fox, which is responsible for the “American Crime Story” producers Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.

“We’re excited to evolve our relationship with Fox and to bring their lauded content to our members around the world,” Netflix vice president of global television, Sean Carey stated. “Given the popularity of the first season of ‘American Crime Story,’ we are thrilled to offer this acclaimed drama series to our members.”
The first season of the show did exceptionally well during its TV run. According to Variety, “It’s the most-watched new series on cable thus far this year, garnering an average seven-day audience of 7.5 million, with a 3.15 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic.” The show also was a hit with critics as it recently received 22 Emmy nominations.
Historically FX has not been quick to hand off the streaming rights of their shows to Netflix. Amazon and Hulu have been given the U.S. streaming rights to several FX series. John Landgraf, FX Networks CEO, does not like how Netflix tends to remove the channel branding from the programs once they’ve been placed on the streaming service. Every FX series has a “FX Presents” image in the title sequence, and Netflix’s removal of this type of content has been a source of frustration with the media company CEO.
The second season of “American Crime Story” will center around Hurricane Katrina and is set to premiere on FX in 2017.
