One of the most compelling aspects of any TV show is the relationships between the characters. Some are heartwarming, some are heart pounding, and some leave you feeling downright sad. But there’s also those relationships that leave you scratching your head and wondering how it all came to pass.

Whether it’s a romantic relationship or simply a deep friendship, what happens between the characters acts as a sort of catalyst for the rest of the show. After all, relationships are what drive the majority of real life too.

Here’s our list of five TV couples that left us scratching our heads.

Ted And Robin In โ€œHow I Met Your Motherโ€

The very first episode of the very first season of How I Met Your Mother set the stage for the epic love story that was Ted Mosby and Robin Scherbatsky. But as the seasons progressed we waited patiently for Ted to finally introduce the mother.

Fans weren’t thrilled with the series finale. The central theme of the show was “how I met your mother,” but just as the very first episode implied, it was really about “how I met your Aunt Robin.”

Looking back on it though, it makes sense that Ted had to end up with Robin. There were clues throughout the series “your mother” and Ted’s “happily ever after” could end up being one in the same thing.

As weird as the ending was, in a way, it justified the entire series.

Leonard And Penny In โ€œBig Bang Theoryโ€

One of the Big Bang Theory’s most beloved relationships has to be that of Leonard and Penny. They got engaged, but after over a year they still hadn’t even set a wedding date, as Sheldon so kindly pointed out.

So instead of inviting guests, picking out flower arrangements and all the other claptrap that goes along with a big wedding, the couple decided to simply run off to Vegas and get hitched โ€ฆ that night!

All was going well for the lovestruck duo, until Leonard decided it was a good time to tell Penny that two years ago he had gotten drunk and kissed another woman. Yikes.

As the drive continues, Leonard and Penny seem to grow increasingly unsure about their relationship, and whether they should go through with getting married.

They ultimately end up getting married at the beginning of Season 9, and then again in Season 10. But wow, talk about a series of heart-wrenching up and downs.

Jax And Tara In โ€œSons Of Anarchyโ€

The relationship between Jax Teller and Tara Knowles in Sons of Anarchy is potentially one of the most stressful ones that has ever existed on television.

It starts off beautifully, a love story that stretched back to when they were both much younger. Jax and Tara reconnect early on in the series and the bad-boy biker takes the good doctor under his wing.

Their love is like a fire – burning and hot and totally dangerous. As Tara grows increasingly worried about her safety and that of her children, she tries desperately to escape. Of course, Jax won’t have it, and his love quickly turns into bitterness and anger.

Tara is held hostage, along with her children, and Gemma only serves to add further stress to the situation.

Jax and Tara’s relationship really ended when he started keeping her against her will, but when she was brutally murdered by Gemma, it was evident Jax still had deep feelings for her.

It was without a doubt one of the most gut-wrenching scenes in the entire series.

Rick And Shane In โ€œThe Walking Deadโ€

While not romantically involved, Rick Grimes and Shane Walsh from The Walking Dead prove that a zombie apocalypse can wreck even the closest friendships.

Rick and Shane were sheriff’s deputies at the same department before all hell broke loose. When the dead first started walking, Shane was Rick’s most trusted ally. But after learning his wife Lori had a relationship with Shane when they thought he was dead, Rick and Shane’s friendship quickly deteriorates.

Ultimately, Shane goes from being Rick’s closest friend to his worst enemy. Shane plans on killing Rick, taking his position as leader of the group, and also taking Lori as his own. After all, Shane is the only one who can truly protect them, or so he reasons.

The showdown between Rick and Shane is the ultimate antithesis to how their friendship was portrayed at the beginning of the series.

When Rick fatally shoots Shane, things only go from bad to worse.

Jesse And Jane In โ€œBreaking Badโ€

For Jesse and Jane in Breaking Bad, it started off perfectly. They were just next-door neighbors and it was at point in Jesse’s life where he was trying to, in a way, clean himself up and be more responsible.

The two met as Jesse was moving in and at first, Jane was intentionally distant. But she eventually warmed to Jesse and their relationship took off quickly. After they moved in together, things started going south.

Jane started using drugs again and began acting more and more erratically. When she discovered Walter owed Jesse a huge sum of money, she resorted to blackmailing him to get it back. It was a huge shift in Jane’s character.

Her untimely death came at the hands of a drug overdose, leaving Jesse completely and utterly distraught.ย
