Emily Mortimer has officially been tapped to join the live-action Disney musical Mary Poppins Returns. The English actress will be joining Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Mortimer will be taking on the role of Jane Banks in the filim. Her character will be featured alongside Michael, who will be portrayed by Ben Whishaw, according to The Wrap. Mortimer and Whishaw have been cast in the roles to portray the children that were cared for by the popular singing nanny Mary Poppins.

Starring in the title role is Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Edge of Tomorrow, The Girl on the Train). Another notable addition to the cast that was previously announced that Meryl Streep was be taking on the role of a cousin of Poppins.
The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who previously worked with both Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep on Into the Woods. The screenplay was penned by David Magee, based upon P.L. Travers’ The Mary Poppins Stories. John DeLuca and Marc Platt are attached as producers alongside Rob Marshall.
Composing the score will be Marc Shaiman, and writing original songs for the film is Scott Witman.
Disney has stated regarding the storyline of the film: “In Depression-era London, a now-grown jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”
The Disney big screen adaptation of P.L. Travers’ 1943 book titled Mary Poppins became an instant cinematic classic. The movie, which was released in 1964, won five Academy Awards including a Best Actress Oscar for star of the film, Julie Andrews.
Look for Mary Poppins Returns in theaters on Christmas Day of 2018.
