Chinese Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui did something pretty incredible on international television last week. Win? No. Her team actually placed 4th in the 4×100 medley relay. It’s what she did after the race that was pretty awesome. She was honest and not scared and stated her period started the night before and that she was in a lot of pain during the race:
I feel like I didn’t swim very well today and I want to apologize to my teammates, my period started last night, so I’m feeling a bit weak and exhausted. But this is not an excuse. I still didn’t swim well enough.
According to 9gag, Yuanhui is the first female athlete to say this on China Central TV News. Fans praised her on social media for being candid during the interview and not holding back.

Regardless, though, this was bad timing and it’s unfortunate that it had to happen right as Yuanhui was competing.
