Hollywood star Eddie Murphy has been toying around with the idea of returning to stand-up after taking an extremely long hiatus from the stage. The 55-year-old comedian/actor rose to stardom on SNL and through his stand-up comedy specials Delirious (1983) and Raw (1987), but then gave it up in his late 20's.

"I stopped doing standup because it stopped being fun," Murphy recalls. "And the reason it stopped being fun was it was harder to write — and this was before the internet — it was harder to write new stuff. It had gotten so crazy," Murphy stated to The Hollywood Reporter.

Murphy quit stand-up a while ago, but he is now seriously thinking about returning in the near future. "Honestly, now I really am curious about doing it again because it's been so long, and so much has changed and I'm such a different person," he explained. "I'm curious as to what it would be like if I got on stage. But, if I do that, whoever comes to see it has to sit through a bunch of my sh*tty songs," Murphy joked in reference to the music he spends most of his time making.

Eddie Murphy may have stepped away from the stand-up comedy scene, but he remained in the spotlight over the years with hit movies such as Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987) and Coming to America (1988). The 90's was a real hit-or-miss period for Murphy, but then his role(s) in the Nutty Professor became hugely popular. After taking a long hiatus from acting, Murphy is now returning to the big screen.

On September 16, Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy will hit theaters, marking the first time he has made a movie in five years. "I haven't been in the movies the last five years because I was giving the audience a break," he explained. "After a while, the audience needs a break," he continues, "and you need a break, too. You start taking each other for granted. I'm like, 'I know what you all like!' And the audience is like, 'Oh, yeah, I know what he's gonna do!' So you're taking each other for granted, and the next thing you know you're starring in [the 2002 flop The Adventures of] Pluto Nash."

To see more of Eddie Murphy, head to theaters on September to see Mr. Church?

Do you hope Eddie Murphy returns to the stage to do stand-up comedy?
