'The Exorcist' Producers Hope the Series Runs for Seven Years

To the surprise of many, the TV adaptation of The Exorcist gave horror fans one of the most entertaining shows of 2016, something the show's creators hope they can continue for many more years to come. When speaking with PopCulture.com, executive producers Jeremy Slater and Sean Crouch revealed we've only just begun to see the series unfold, with the whole journey aiming to run for seven years. You can check out the interview in the video above.

"When I first pitched the show to FOX, I said, 'We can't follow the same family for seven years. You'll run out of horrible things to inflict upon these poor characters. You need the new case every year.' We will be following Marcus and Tomas and Bennet, they're the heart of our show," Slater explained.

This falls in line with a similar formula that American Horror Story has found much success with, although we shouldn't expect to see actors from previous seasons playing new roles.

Despite the challenges faced by translating a movie into an entire season of television, Slater explained, "The thing that you can do in television that you can't do in film is spend 10 hours with the characters and present the possession from the viewpoint of the possessed, at times. That was something I had never seen before in a possession story and it was a big part of the appeal. You can come to care about them more than you would in a 90-minute movie."

One of the biggest strengths of The Exorcist was its cast, but Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Hannah Kasulka, and Brianne Howey are not scheduled to appear in the upcoming season. Considering how things were left when we last saw the Rance family, it makes sense why they wouldn't return, but it's still sad to see them go.

Alfonso Herrera, Kurt Egyiawan, and Ben Daniels will all be returning, however, as they played the priests set on vanquishing the demonic presences in the first season, but it sounds like their job is far from over.

The second season's synopsis is as follows.

"Season 2 picks up with Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and a newly collarless Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) out of Chicago and on the road, searching out evil. Across the Atlantic, Father Bennett (Kurt Egyiawan) attempts to weed out those within the Vatican who have turned against God. Ultimately, Tomas and Marcus are led to Andrew Kim (John Cho), a former child psychologist who runs a group home for five at-risk foster children on a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle. When one of the children under Andrew's care is targeted by a powerful force, the two priests head west, setting themselves on a collision course with hell."

The Exorcist premieres on FOX on Friday, September 29 at 9 p.m. EST.
