California Man Allegedly Calls 911 to Say He Killed His Mother

Police arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday after he allegedly called 911 to report that he strangled his own mother at their Orange, California home.

Orange Police Department Sgt. Phil McMullin says that Brandon Sanchez called the authorities around 2:45 p.m. to declare that he killed his mother, Jamie Greene, 53, after a domestic dispute.

"When you hear a call go out you hope he is hallucinating and it is not true," McMullin said while talking to PEOPLE. "This was a case where it actually happened."

Sgt. McMullin said that during the 911 call, "[Sanchez] said he strangled his mother and she was dead."

When the police arrived at the 5800 block of Ridgemont Court, officers managed to get Sanchez to come outside. He was then detained and the officers went inside to find Greene dead on the first floor.

According to Sgt. McMullin, Sanchez lived in the home with his mother and stepfather. Prior to the 911 call, there were no prior requests for assistance from police. McMullin added that the "house is in a nice part of town in Orange."

The neighbors were shocked to hear about the incident.

"We're just a really quire neighborhood and stuff just really doesn't happen here," said Maryann Lawson, a neighbor, according to NBC News. "It's quite shocking."

Other residents in the area did not recall hearing of any domestic disturbances between Sanchez and Greene in the past.

"It was all a big surprise to me," neighbor Kamron Kim said. "We didn't hear any family issues or any yelling at night or any sort of thing."

Sanchez is currently being held in the Orange County Jail. His arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday.

At this point, it remains unclear if Sanchez has retained a lawyer and whether or not he will be entering a guilty plea.

No other details have been released in regards to the crime at this time.
