What You Need to Know About Mastering Brown Lipcolor

It seems so 1990s of us to want to rock a brown lip, especially as young Womanistas watching Kimmy Gibbler don the trend -- DJ would never, let's be real. Now, as Full House is coming back to the screen, it only seems appropriate that we celebrate with the latest trend to emerge back in our lives like John Stamos 2.0.

The trick to mastering the bold brown lip is not going with too deep of a lipstick color. Chicago makeup artist Kiley Phillips recommends mattifying the color by beginning with a foundation base, "Prep your lips with your foundation and then apply a matte brown shade." Matte lipcolor as opposed to a lipstick with sheen or a gloss will prevent you from looking too retro.

Phillips suggests gravitating towards the taupe to milk chocolate tones, "Across the board, do not go three or four shades darker than your natural skin tone. Much darker than that tends to alter your complexion, making you look washed out." If the shade you chose is a bit too dark or if after layering becomes too concentrated, balance it with a bit of blush lipstick, which after blending will bring warmth to your complexion." For lighter complexions, pick a tone with bronze or gold hints. For medium tones, hints of red and for darker complexions, try undertones of burgundy.
