'Tis the season for holiday movies — and with them new interpretations that might ruin the innocence of beloved stories from our childhood.
A Reddit post from user Batfan54 has resurfaced, speculating about a sinister subplot in the Christmas classic Elf. Batfan54 suggests that Buddy the Elf — portrayed by Will Ferrell — is actually a deviant, feigning innocence to gain access to sensitive situations.
The theory is chiefly based on Buddy's encounter with Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) while she's singing in the shower. Jovie is singing the female part to the duet "Baby it's Cold Outside." Buddy, not realizing she's in the shower, follows the sound of her voice to the locker room at work and begins singing the accompanying part along with her. Jovie yells at him, and Buddy covers his eyes and runs out of the room.
Jovie later confronts Buddy to ask him why he was in the locker room while she was in the shower, naked. "I didn't know you were naked," Buddy responds earnestly.
However, Batfan54 points out there is a scene earlier in this very same movie that shows Buddy taking a shower in a tiny, elf-sized tub, naked except for his little pointed hat. The Redditor reasons that this means Buddy does know what a shower is, and he was merely trying to use his innocence and love of Christmas as a pretext to infiltrate the women's locker room and spy on people.
Batfan54 points out several other instances to support their case, check out the original post below.
