Jerry Lawler Comments on New Day/Usos Rap Battle Scandal

For the second week in a row, something scandalous was uttered on a live WWE microphone. During a rap battle against the New Day, the Usos made a not-so-subtle reference to Xavier Woods and his sexually explicit leak with WWE's Paige. In such an egregious breaking of the PG Era's code, we would assume Vince McMahon would be furious.

According to Jerry "The King" Lawler, this is not the case. On a recent episode of his podcast, Dinner With the King, Lawler downplayed the melodrama and hinted that Vince might be actually OK with the Uso's R-rated rap lyric.

"You say Vince [McMahon] would not have been pleased, but I'm sure that's not what would have been something that they told him to say or been scripted. Once again, that was one of the things that Vince used to always say: It's live TV; nothing can go wrong. Because of that, anything can happen on live TV. That's one of the cool things about it...but I bet that got edited out somewhere."

As much as WWE would like to pretend they are wrestling's version of Disney, a contentious moment on live TV is always good for business. It gives fans the impression that anything can happen and you may miss a big moment by watching a taped version of the show. But all within moderation. WWE probably won't be enabling multiple usages of the "N" word or references to taped threesomes anytime soon. But it's served as some cheap exposure as of late. As long as no one gets hurt or no laws or broken, a little scandal is good for any TV show.

Moments like this past Monday's has Attitude Era nostalgics clamoring for a return of more racy segments on WWE television. While that will never happen, it's kind of nice to know that WWE can get a wild hair every now and then. If anything, WWE could say "If you like a more adult product, go check out old RAWs on the WWE Network for $9.99 a month."

WWE's product is so micromanaged today that moments like this Monday's will prove to be fleeting. However, WWE should toss in an R-rated Easter Egg in a RAW every now and again. Fans, social media, and wrestling websites love such instances not just because of the instant gratification, but because we'll be more intrigued to see that happens next.
