'Mayans MC' Pilot Undergoing Reshoots, Recasting Key Roles

It looks like the first ride for Mayans MC has gotten off to a bumpy start.

The first spin-off from the world of Sons of Anarchy has hit a bit of trouble this week, as it has now been revealed that major reshoots have been ordered. Not only that, but there are also reports that some key roles are going to be recast before the reshoots begin.

According to Deadline, FX has officially ordered a reshoot of the pilot, which was initially filmed back in May. Creator Kurt Sutter directed the episode, but he will be replaced by another filmmaker for the reshoot.

Noberto Barba, best known for his work on Preacher, The Path, The Bridge, and Chicago Justice, will be taking over as the director of the pilot. Sutter is still involved, but will be focusing more on the writing aspect.

The report also states that some key roles will be recast. There's no telling which actors will be on the way out, but the finished product won't be exactly as fans had expected it.

Now, reshoots on pilots are fairly common. Sons of Anarchy actually underwent a similar process before it aired in 2008. The pilot episodes had to be reshot after it was decided that Scott Glenn wasn't working out as Clay Morrow, and Ron Perlman was brought in to replace him.

What is worrisome however, is the fact that so many changes are coming at once. The director is being replaced, the creator is diving back into the writing of the project, and multiple roles are under review. This could be a bad thing for the new series.

The big positive to take from this situation is that, although there may have been some problems to this point, FX cares enough about the show to undergo these reshoots. It sounds like, come hell or high water, Mayans MC will get a chance at a full season.

The recasting process is currently underway, and round two of the pilot is expected to begin later this summer.
