'The Exorcist' Creators on Why They Brought the Story to TV

When FOX announced that The Exorcist was being developed for television, horror fans were up in arms.

"Why would anyone want to ruin the greatest horror movie ever?!" was the sentiment many fans held.

Fortunately, those in charge of the series knew exactly what they were doing, and fans changed their tune once they started watching. While the ending wasn't a happy one, we still can't help but wonder why the creators wanted to bring The Exorcist to TV.

At San Diego Comic-Con, PopCulture.com caught up with creators Jeremy Slater and Sean Crouch, and they acknowledged that the risk in revamping The Exorcist was incredibly high.

"A lot of fans online were rightfully skeptical when they heard we were turning the greatest horror movie of all time into a network tv show," Slater said. "That's an idiotic idea, if I hadn't been on the show I probably would've been saying the same thing."

Slater went on to tell us exactly why this was the right move for the source material.

"The thing that you can do in television that you can't do in film is spend 10 hours with the characters and present the possession from the viewpoint of the possessed, at times. That was something I had never seen before in a possession story and it was a big part of the appeal. You can come to care about them more than you would in a 90-minute movie," Slater said.

"It's a blessing and a curse," Slater continued. "It's a blessing because you can grow to love these characters. It's a curse because, you look at the original Exorcist, and there's 10 minutes of actual exorcism in that movie. Stretching that out and finding new ways to keep it fresh and scary is really tough. Luckily we have a pretty phenomenal writer's room and they really rise to the challenge and find new ways to disturb us every day."

Season 2 of The Exorcist is set to premiere Friday, September 29 on FOX.
