On Friday morning, Spicer chose to step down after reportedly opposing President Donald Trump's decision to offer New York financier Anthony Scaramucci the job of communications director, according to the New York Times.

President Trump requested that Spicer stayed on as press secretary. However, Spicer reportedly said that he believed the appointment of Scaramucci was a mistake.

On Thursday, Trump and his daughter Ivanka met with Scaramucci in the Oval Office. The president offered Scaramucci the position at this time, a source close to the situation told NBC News.

"Comms is what Anthony [Scaramucci] does," the source said. "It's how he built his business. The guy knows media. He's been a good advocate for the president."

During much of Spicer's tenure, he was handling both the responsibilities of the press secretary and communications director.

Before taking the job as the press secretary of the White House, Spicer worked as the communications director for the Republican National Committee.

The resignation comes on the day after President Trump's administration surpassed its first six months in office.
