Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Earns $77 Million At Weak Memorial Day Box Office

There was a time when Memorial Day weekend was the unofficial kick off to the summer blockbuster season. After years of disappointing Memorial Day weekend returns and movie release schedule increasingly crowded with big budget pictures, it seems that era is long gone.

This year's Memorial Day weekend saw a collective box office total of $172.3 million, the weakest box office returns since 1999 when Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was the biggest release and the box office totaled just $142.5 million

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales proved to be the biggest fish in this small box office seas. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean franchise movie earned $77 million over the four-day weekend. That's the lowest opening of any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies since the first, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl with $45 million.

By comparison, the franchise peaked when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opened to $135.6 million in 2006. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End opened to $114.7 million in 2007 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tides opened to $90 million.

Still, the franchise has been a boon for Disney and will have earned the company $4 billion in total by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Effron are leading Baywatch to an $22.5 which is below expectations for the $60 million-budgeted action-comedy. Baywatch opened on Wednesday and its box office total now stands at $27.6 million

With Baywatch sinking in its opening weekend, Disney claimed the top two spots at the box office with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales at number one and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in second place with $25 million in its fourth weekend at the box office.

Last week's box office winner, Alien: Covenant, dropped down to fourth place. In its second weekend, Alien: Covenant will add just $13.3 million to its box office total, which will help the film cross the $60 million mark at the box office.

Teen romance Everything, Everything will round out the top five. After debuting at the number three spot last weekend, Everything, Everything added additional $7.4 million over the long Memorial Day weekend.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British Navy.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the franchise inspired by the Disney Parks ride and is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer. Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Hector Barbossa, respectively. New Pirates of the Caribbean stars include Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also features the returns of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively after they both skipped Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

3. Baywatch

Opening Weekend

Weekend: $22.5 million
Total: $27.6 million

Baywatch follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Baywatch directed by Seth Gordon, based on the television series of the same name. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass and Ilfenesh Hadera.

4. Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
