08/31/2017 03:52 pm EDT
John Mayer took his The Search for Everything Tour to Nashville Tuesday night, and during the packed show, the musician took a moment to pay tribute to the late Glen Campbell with a rendition of Campbell's "Gentle on My Mind."
"Whether I play it right or wrong," Mayer said upon introducing the song, "I'd rather have played it."
The crowd received Mayer's performance enthusiastically, with Nashville the perfect place for Mayer to honor the late star.
Campbell, a legend in the world of country music, passed away Tuesday at 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Many country stars took to social media to pay tribute to the singer, who has won multiple Grammy awards and released nearly 60 studio albums over his decades-long career.
