Kate Middleton, Prince William Took an Iconic Photo in Honor of Princess Diana

Prince William is following in his mother's footsteps.

To close out their royal tour of India and Bhutan, Prince William and Kate Middleton traveled to India's Taj Mahal on Saturday afternoon, taking the same trip that William's mother Princess Diana made in 1992.

The couple visited the famous monument on their final day in India, PEOPLE shares, posing for photos on the bench made famous by Princess Diana on her trip to the same spot, which she took just a few months before her separation from Prince Charles.

On this trip, however, William and Kate were the picture of happiness, posing for photos in multiple locations and taking in the wonder of the monument before them.

"It's beautiful," William said of the Taj Mahal, adding that the site was "stunning."

The couple also chose to sit for photos on the bench Diana made famous in her own photo, with a spokesman commenting on the decision that the pair "decided to sit on the bench this morning. It was not something they had properly considered until this morning. The decision for them was that is the place where people who come here to see this place will sit. It is a totally symmetrical position, right in the center. That's the reason the Princess of Wales sat there when she came. It's the natural place. They made the decision on that basis."

The spokesman did note that the decision would remind people of Diana's iconic photo, adding "[William] completely understands that people come to visit this place with his mother in mind. It's about new memories for them."

"He feels incredibly lucky to visit a place where his mother's memory is kept alive by so many who travel there."
