Country Singer David Nail and Wife Overcome Infertility to Welcome Twins

David Nail's new album might be named Fighter, but in an interview with The Tennessean, the country singer revealed that he was really talking about his wife.

Nail and his wife, Catherine, struggled for years to conceive, but have since overcome the odds with Catherine giving birth to a healthy pair of twins, Lawson and Lillian, in December.

"I was embarrassed for the longest time," Nail said of the pair's infertility struggles. "A lot of what we dealt with had to do with me. And as a man, you definitely don't want to hear that. It's your job to provide and be a husband and a father, and she had dreams of being a mother."

The couple sought help from fertility specialists, and eventually decided to try in vitro fertilization. After multiple complications, two embryos were finally transferred to Catherine, and incredibly, they both took.

"When you're trying to get pregnant, you're watching for every possible signal from your body to tell you it's pregnant," she said. "I looked at David and I said, 'I think we might be pregnant.'"

Catherine then took a pregnancy test at home to confirm her suspicions, and the the test turned out positive. She later surprised her husband by placing the positive test in a box with a pair of baby sneakers.

"He was like, 'What's the Nike bag? What did you get?' " she recalled. "He gets the box out and he's like, 'Baby shoes?' He gets the box out and he sees the pregnancy test and his first instinct is like, 'Huh? Are you sure? We aren't supposed to go to the doctor until tomorrow.' He totally second-guessed it.'"

Doctors soon confirmed that Catherine was pregnant with twins, and she gave birth to Lawson and Lillian via scheduled cesarean section on Dec. 12, 2015.

"That moment changed me," Catherine shared. "I want to hear that cry forever. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. They showed him to me over the curtain. I wanted to pull that curtain down and hold him. It was like a dream. And then she came out guns a blazing, too."

To celebrate his wife, Nail had penned his new album's title track for her, but after the twins' arrival, he added the track "Babies" for his new arrivals, along with three other new songs.

"The best way I can explain the record is that it's a lot of subject matter I've previously sung about but I hadn't got it fully off my chest," he said. "I feel (creatively) free, and I'm already curious to see what I'm going to do next."
