'Fate Of The Furious' Director Discusses The Franchise Going Into Space

The Fast and The Furious franchise has gotten way bigger and bolder since its humble street-racing beginnings. So while giant set-pieces on ice with submarines have made their way into the films, fans have been asking when Dom and company will take their high-jinks to the next level: outer space.

While it sounds pretty absurd at first, anything can happen in film, especially with a franchise as wild as this one that can rack up more than $1 billion internationally.

When F. Gary Gray, the director of The Fate of the Furious, was asked about this interstellar possibility, he followed that same line of thought, saying "anything's possible."

"Outer space? Listen, I wouldn't rule (out) anything with this franchise," he told Screen Rant. "When I read submarine I'm like 'OK, anything's possible'. [Laughs] You never know. I haven't read 'Dom on Mars' yet but again, you just never know."

This is the first time the minds behind the project have weighed in on taking the series to space, either. Back in April, Chris Morgan, the writer of the last six Fast & Furious films, was asked if he's considered writing a space mission into a future film.

"Look, I get all versions of that question," Morgan told Uproxx. "I get, 'Are you going to space?,' and, 'Please, God, tell me you're not going to space because you'll lose me if you do. The only way I'd go to space is if I had something so good."

So, while the team may not be blasting off just yet, never say never.

As far as the plans for the series' ninth installment, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are reportedly set to return. However, Grey and actress Michelle Rodriguez have called their futures with the films into question.
