Deep Blue Sea 2 is Officially In the Works

Lovers of shark movies, you have an early "Shark Week" gift coming to you today, as it has been announced that Deep Blue Sea 2 is happening!

The report from Moviehole is that Deep Blue Sea 2 will be aired as a telefilm on the SyFy channel, instead of the theatrical release. Production is currently underway in Cape Town, South Africa, with Darin Scott (Something Wicked) directing, and Aquaman star Michael Beach as the only announced cast member (so far).

It's not at all surprising to see SyFy taking on this project; the network is about to release Sharknado 5, a franchise that has been one of its most (inexplicably) successful brands of all. Deep Blue Sea has remained a cult hit since 1999, with several attempts at a full theatrical sequel having been made over the years.

In term of the story for Deep Blue 2, here's what we know so far:

SYNOPSIS (via Moviehole): "Dr Klaus Van Etten is experimenting on bull sharks, much to the chagrin of Misty and her team of marine experts. The sharks get out, of course, and all hell breaks loose."

The original film starred Thomas Jane (The Punisher), LL Cool J, Saffron Burrows (The Bank Job) and Samuel L. Jackson; none of the original cast (the surviving ones) are expected to return in this SyFy sequel.

No official air date for Deep Blue Sea 2 has been announced yet.

From start to finish, 'Con Air' is probably the most action-packed '90s film that features a beautifully maniacal John Malkovich and a hilariously campy Nic Cage as Cameron Poe.
One of the best sequels ever to be created. 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' is another testament to James Cameron's sequel skills.
'True Romance' may be unexpected, but its a great first screenwriting run from Quentin Tarantino and displays some awesome characters, specifically Gary Oldman as the creepy as hell Drexl Spivey.
'The Rock' is hands down the best action film of the '90s. Michael Bay made a popcorn flick masterpiece with this film. Green Flares!
