'The Devil Inside' Star Evan Helmuth Dies at 40

Actor Evan Helmuth died on Monday due to stroke complications. He was 40.

Helmuth was best known for portraying Father David Keane in the 2012 horror film The Devil Inside. He also had roles in numerous other TV and film projects.

He had numerous TV guest roles on shows including NCIS, CSI: NY, Castle, Alias, Bones and Rizzoli & Isles. His most recent credit was a guest role on Battle Creek.

He had small film roles in in Jobs, Garfield and Fever Pitch, among others. He also had a role in the video game L.A. Noire.

According to Deadline, Helmuth attended the USC School of Dramatic Arts. While there, he befriended Alias writer Josh Appelbaum, who shared kinds words about his late friend with the outlet.

"Evan was the warmest, most generous soul imaginable," Appelbaum said. "His passion for this industry was only outweighed by his passion for his friends. We met over 20 years ago at USC, where Evan was an instant lightning rod on the stage. He loved his craft, he loved entertaining audiences and he was as good as it gets at both. (He also loved PEARL JAM!!!). His life and legacy will never be forgotten by the countless broken hearts around Los Angeles tonight…"

Helmuth is survived by his sister Erika, his stepmother Paula; and his beloved dog Sasha, who he loved to share photos of on Twitter.

Helmuth had not posted to his Twitter profile since May, but his last post is quite somber.

He shared Chris Cornell's cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," which was intended as a tribute to the Soundgarden frontman, who had just died himself.
