Manhattan District Attorney Seeking to Indict Harvey Weinstein Next Week

The district attorney in Manhattan is reportedly planning to approach a grand jury seeking an indictment for Hollywood film executive Harvey Weinstein. However, a spokesperson for Weinstein said on Wednesday that they “do not believe” an indictment is “imminent.”

“A formal presentation will be made on Mr. Weinstein’s behalf in the appropriate course of the investigation, and we strongly believe we will demonstrate that no criminal charges are warranted,” the spokesperson said.

The 65-year-old disgraced mogul has been at the center of an investigation helmed by the New York Police Department ever since Boardwalk Empire actress Paz de la Huerta claimed that he raped her twice in 2010. Detectives took her complaint and found the story to be “credible,” a spokesperson for the department told PEOPLE.

A spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, Joan Vollero, explained last week that an investigation into Weinstein is ongoing.

“A senior sex crimes prosecutor is assigned to this investigation, and the Office has been working with our partners in the NYPD since the new allegations came to light. As this is an active investigation, we will not be commenting further,” she said.

At this time, aspects of de la Huerta’s story have been corroborated by the police. They explained that if the allegations were recent and if Weinstein was in New York that he would be arrested.

“Formal charges against Weinstein could come down the middle of next week,” a source told People. “If the charges are not confirmed next week, it’ll definitely happen before Thanksgiving.”

The investigators are still hoping to gather more evidence against Weinstein before seeking a warrant for his arrest. Currently, the film exec is getting treatment in Arizona.

Over 50 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. The list includes Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and Cara Delevingne.

Weinstein’s team has denied that any non-consensual sex took place.

“Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein. Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances.”
