Bruno Mars Goes Above and Beyond to Aid Flint Water Crisis Victims

During his concert Saturday night in Auburn Hills, Michigan, singer and songwriter, Bruno Mars made a surprise announcement revealing he would donate $1 million to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to address the heartbreaking city’s water crisis.

ABC News reports that the hefty donation will come out of revenue from Saturday’s sold-out show at The Palace of Auburn Hills as part of Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour.

In a statement from Mars, he went on to thank the Michigan audience for supporting him in this cause.

“Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster,” he said. “As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.”

Flint’s water problems began in 2014 when the city transitioned from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River. With the water not properly treated through its processing, it led to alarmingly high levels of lead with thousands exposed to contaminated water, including children. Twelve people died in a Legionnaire’s outbreak connected to the crisis.

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint’s president and CEO, Isaiah M. Oliver said in a statement obtained by ABC News that they are thankful for Mars’ bigheartedness.

“With a grateful heart, [we are] honored to accept this inspiring donation,” he said. “We know Bruno Mars’ $1 million gift will be transformative to the children and families of Flint. He understands the issues faced by Flint citizens, and we are touched by his concern and generosity.”

The “Versace on the Floor” singer is currently on his 24K Magic World Tour and will be honored on Sunday with the Visionary Award at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards. He released his album 24K Magic in November 2016 and has sold over 2 million copies.
