Vehicle Plows Through White Nationalist Rally Counter-Protesters

One person has died as a result of the attack, according to Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer.

"I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here," he tweeted. "I urge all people of good will--go home."

A group of counter-protesters has been struck by a vehicle at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to the Associated Press.

No word on how many were injured in the incident.

The initial report says a group of several hundred was "peacefully marching" when they were hit. Based on the information available, these were people responding against the nationalist rally.

Video of the incident shows a grey Dodge Charger plowing into a dense group of people. The driver then reversed at high speed as witnesses chased after. The car's front-end is shown with considerable damage from the impact.

The ALCU of Virginia shared photos from the accident. Several are shown on the ground receiving medical treatment.

"Folks said counter-protesters were hit by a vehicle as they turned the corner. Medics are here," the group tweeted.

The counter-protesters were responding to the "Unite the Right Rally," which was sponsored by white nationalist groups. The nationalist groups were angry that a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was being removed by the city of Charlottesville.

The rally started on Friday night, with images of white nationalists carrying torches through the University of Virginia campus going viral. Public outcry on the ground and online began to pour out, with authorities intervening.

A state of emergency was declared after violence erupted between white nationalists and counter-protesters earlier in the day.
