Tourist Suspected to Be Half-Eaten by Lizards on Thailand's 'Death Island'

A 30-year-old Belgian female tourist was found half-eaten by lizards on a Thai holiday destination called "Death Island."

The woman, who has been identified as Elise Dallemagne, was heading down a pathway on Koh Tao on April 21 when she was last seen. A chilling photo that was released by the authorities this week shows Dallemagne walking on the trail, and it was the final visual of the tourist before she died.

Dallemagne was found a week later on April 28. Law enforcement officials determined that the woman hanged herself on the island, the same place where seven other foreigners have died in the last three years.

After Elise's death was ruled a suicide, her family did not accept the conclusion. They maintain that she was murdered. The Thai police are now re-opening an investigation into the matter, according to Daily Mail.

To make the issue more mysterious, Elise was using a fake name when checking into an accommodation in the weeks leading up to her death. She was going by the name Dupuis instead of Dallemagne. A picture of a hotel check-in book shows where Elise scratched out the name Dallemagne and wrote in the alias.

Elisa stayed at the Triple B Hotel at Mae Hat bay on April 19 and asked for the cheapest room. She refused to provide hotel management with her passport details saying that she would "provide them later," a hotel worker said.

"Police continue to look for new evidence, because it was an unnatural death, but we have not found any," Police Colonel Preecha Kldsawad, the deputy of the Surat Thani Police said.

Michele van Egten, Elise's mother, says that she does not believe the version of events as told by the Thai police. She fears that the authorities are attempting to suppress a series of gruesome tourist murders.

"I do not believe what the police have told us. We fear somebody else was involved," Michele said. "We're more and more thinking that the police information is not the right explanation."

Prior to Elise's death, Michele said that her daughter was traveling around Asia for the last two years and that she had been living at a yoga and tantra retreat on Koh Phangan.

Elise's body was found in the jungle near the island's Tanote BTanote Bay. The locals became suspicious after noticing a monitor lizard going back and forth into the jungle on numerous occasions. They followed the animal and discovered it had been feeding on Elise's remains.

Elise was found among rocks behind the Tanote Family Bay Resort. She had to be identified via previous X-rays and dental records.

While the police said that Elise hung herself from a tree, there was no suicide note or message recovered.
