Man Murders Girlfriend, Describes the Slaying on Reddit

A 24-year-old Canadian man has been arrested in Texas after being on the run for months following an incident in which he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and later described the slaying on Reddit.

On Tuesday, Ager Hasan was taken into custody by the United States Secret Service during a traffic stop in San Antonio, according to PEOPLE. The arrest marked the end of a two-month manhunt, Inspector Michael Haffner of Canada's Waterloo Regional Police Service said.

While on the run, a person claiming to be Ager Hasan allegedly confessed to the killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Melinda Vasilije, in a Reddit post. In the message, which has since been taken down, the writer claimed to have stabbed Vasilije in self-defense after she lunged at him with a knife.

The altercation was allegedly ignited after he admitted to being romantically involved with someone other than Vasilije.

"She started freaking out," the post read, according to Waterloo Region Record. "Wouldn't say a word and just kept slapping me with tears in her eyes. Slaps turned into hits."

The writer says they then grabbed a knife to protect themselves.

"I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times. I was confused, shocked and scared. I had no intentions of that happening. When I left I honestly thought she just passed out. Then I looked at the blood, and started freaking out and just ran."

After the manhunt to find Hasan was launched, investigators were in contact with him via email.

"We were encouraging him to contact us and he did and there were email conversations back and forth between him and the officers," Haffner says. "It was all in relation to him turning himself in."

Inspector Haffner spoke out about capturing Hasan.

"It is a great capture for us," Haffner says. "It has been a difficult investigation since April, but it is nice to have some closure for our community and hopefully it provides comfort for the family."

Prior to his arrest, an Instagram account that appeared to belong to Hasan posted a message about wanting to turn himself in.

"I'm coming home," the post read. "It's time to end the dark path I've been traveling and give people the closure they deserve."

Inspector Haffner isn't convinced that Hasan doesn't have any intention of turning himself over to the law enforcement officials.

"We were comforted in the end that he was ending the dark path and turning himself in," Haffner says, "but being arrested in San Antonio means that it might not have been the case."
