The Kids of Stephen King's 'It' Recall Their Reactions to Seeing Pennywise for the First Time

Pennywise the Clown is terrifying to see on the screen, but can you imagine seeing him in person?

This is the situation that a group of young actors found themselves in when they arrived on set to begin filming Stephen King's It.

The stars portray the infamous Losers' Club, a group of kids in the classic King novel that are terrorized by the killer clown. While it was just a set of a movie - somewhere they've all been before - seeing Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) for the first time was quite an experience.

The Monsters in It Will Appear Very Different From the Novel

While promoting It at San Diego Comic-Con, The Losers' Club stars took some time to chat with us about their experiences with the clown on set.

Sophia Lillis, who plays Beverly Marsh, spoke first and she had a unique reaction to seeing the horrifying clown.

"We weren't allowed to see him until our first scene with him, so the fear could be raw and real, and I laughed," Lillis revealed. "That was just me, that's how I cope. I thought it was funny cause he's just this guy and he's so nice to you, but he had all this clown make-up on."

Wyatt Oleff (Stan Uris) joked around with Lillis, saying that he actually was scared. However, he did have a moment with Skarsgard on set that he couldn't help but chuckle about.

"For me, it was definitely scary most of the time. There was one time when I first saw him though, that he was just in his tank top. He had his clown pants, this tank top, and his clown make-up, just holding this cup of coffee. He was like 'Hey, what's up?' He was really nice."

Chosen Jacobs (Mike Hanlon) was up next. From the first scene, he knew that Pennywise would be scary on the big screen, but it was hard for him to get past how well Skarsgard treated all of them on the set.

"It was scary in the sense of 'Wow, I can see how this is going to be scary on-screen' but he's an awesome guy. Bill Skarsgard is an awesome guy, and he made sure we were all okay, and he made sure we felt comfortable with everything."

Like Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grayer (Eddie Kaspbrak) took a lot of pride in how scary Pennywise looked on the set.

"When I first saw him, I wasn't necessarily scared as much as I was proud. I was really proud of how he looked and how it was different from the Tim Curry version. I thought they did a great job."

Finn Wolfhard (Richie Tozier) was more awe-struck than anything, knowing that this was going to be a very different experience than he expected.

"I wasn't really scared, I just looked at Jaeden [Lieberher] and we were like 'What did we just get ourselves into?'"

Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben Hanscom) put a nice bow on everyone's comments by saying that they each carried a little bit of truth with him as well.

"Like Finn said, we totally all were like 'What did we get ourselves into?' He was terrifying. But, like Wyatt said, he'd walk up to you and be like, 'Hey, how you guys doing?' Just hanging out with a coke in his hand. Just a really nice guy."

The entire Losers' Club will go toe-to-toe with Pennywise when It hits theaters on September 8. 2017. Until then, you can check out our entire interview with the young cast in the video above.
