'RoboCop' Returning to Theaters for 30th Anniversary

The future of law enforcement is returning to theaters for a special anniversary event.

RoboCop will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sept. 10 with a special showing at Alamo Drafthouse theaters.

Star Peter Weller will be on hand for the special, one-night only event. Weller will be in attendance at the Dallas City Hall that served as the location for RoboCop's OCP Headquarters scene. The event will also feature food trucks and photo ops and will be live-streamed to Alamo Drafthouse theaters nationwide.

Weller will participate in a live Q&A session following the screening and, even if you're not at the event in Dallas, other RoboCop screenings will have a party-like atmosphere with film props on hand. More ticketing information can be found here.

RoboCop, directed by Paul Verhoeven, was a popular film when it first debuted in 1987 but has become an even more popular cult film in the thirty years that have followed. The original RoboCop birthed a franchise that spans merchandise, two film sequels, a live-action television series and miniseries, a 2014 movie reboot, two animated series, video games, and several comic book adaptations, spin-offs, and crossovers.

RoboCop was critically acclaimed, earning five Saturn Awards, two BAFTA Award nominations and the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, plus two additional Academy Award nominations. RoboCop earned $53.5 million in its original run at the box office.

In RoboCop, in a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

The cyberpunk action film was directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, and Ronny Cox.
