'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Reboot Screenwriter Gives Update

The creative team behind Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, reportedly penned the script for a remake of the '90s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, but details about the project have been minimal. Hoping to get answers about the project's status, Bloody Disgusting reached out to Flanagan for an update.

"I don't have any updates on [I Know What You Did Last Summer]. I haven't heard anything in quite a while," Flanagan revealed about the project. "Our involvement ended at the script stage, which we delivered and were happy with, but I'm not sure what's happening now."

The director added, "I was never attached to direct – Jeff and I were only responsible for the script. It's a great property and it is in terrific hands with [producer] Neal Moritz, so I really hope it gets made."

It's no surprise that Flanagan isn't attached to direct, as his hectic schedule probably doesn't have the room to accommodate the massive undertaking. Following his successes with Hush and the Ouija sequel, the director helmed a feature film adaptation of Gerald's Game, based on the Stephen King story, for Netflix.

Flanagan is once again working with Netflix to bring to life an adaptation of the novel The Haunting of Hill House, which was previously adapted for feature films in 1963 and 1999 with the title "The Haunting." Flanagan's version, however, is going to be a 10-episode series that uses the source novel as an inspiration, allowing the filmmaker to reinterpret the tale of four vacationers spending the summer in a supposedly haunted house.

Following the success of Scream, 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer attempted to capitalize on the new brand of horror the aforementioned film helped spearhead, which was smarter genre fare aimed at a young demographic, but emphasized witty dialogue and pop culture references over gore and nudity.

Another shared trait between the mid-'90s films was featuring the hottest young actors, with the 1997 film bringing together Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. Hewitt had previously starred in Party of Five and Gellar starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with this film being the breakout hit for the whole ensemble.

The film spawned two sequels, with Hewitt and Prinze reprising their roles in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer but none of the original cast going on to appear in I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.
