'The Dark Tower' Reaches $19.5 Million at the Box Office in Opening Weekend

The Dark Tower shot straight to the top of the box office in its opening weekend.

Despite mostly negative reviews, the star power of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and the decades of anticipation for Stephen King's fantasy opus to be adapted into a film will propel The Dark Tower to a first place finish at a box office that is offering little in the way of fresh competition.

The Dark Tower earned $7.8 million from 3,451 locations on Friday and is expected to bring that total to $19.5 million through the weekend. The Dark Tower was made with a $60 million dollar budget. Reshoots and delays left many fans worried about the film even before the negative reviews started to pour in.

That leaves The Dark Tower will have the second smallest total for a box office winner this year behind the much more modestly budgeted Split ($9 million budget, $14.4 million opening weekend).

After two weeks at number one, Christopher Nolan's critically-praised war film Dunkirk slips to the second place spot at the box office. The film is on track for a $17.6 million opening weekend after bringing in $5 million on Friday from 4,014 locations. Those numbers will put Dunkirk at $132 million domestic. The film has already grossed $300 million worldwide.

The Emoji Movie earned $3.8 million from 4,075 locations on Friday and is projected for $12.4 million over the weekend. Girls Trip earned $3.6 million on Friday from 2,582 locations and is set for an $11.4 million weekend. Halle Berry's Kidnap opened to $3.7 million on Friday from 2,378 locations and is looking at a $10.2 million opening weekend.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, Atomic Blonde, Detroit, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Despicable Me 3 fill out the top ten this week. Keep reading to see how the top films at the box office stack up this week.

Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.

The Dark Tower directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel. The film is a continuation of the stories from Stephen King's long-running science fiction and fantasy saga, with references to some of King's other works.

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

Dunkirk written, co-produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy.

3. The Emoji Movie

Hidden inside a smartphone, the bustling city of Textopolis is home to all emojis. Each emoji has only one facial expression, except for Gene, an exuberant emoji with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his best friend Hi-5 and a notorious code breaker called Jailbreak. During their travels through the other apps, the three emojis discover a great danger that could threaten their phone's very existence.

The Emoji Movie stars the voices of T.J. Miller, Anna Faris, James Corden, Patrick Stewart, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle, Jennifer Coolidge, Jake T. Austin, Sofia Vergara and Christina Aguilera.

4. Girls Trip

Best friends Ryan, Sasha, Lisa and Dina are in for the adventure of a lifetime when they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Along the way, they rekindle their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by doing enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

Girls Trip directed by Malcolm D. Lee and written by Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver, from a story written by Barris, Oliver, and Erica Rivinoja. The film stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, Larenz Tate and Mike Colter.

5. Kidnap

A typical afternoon in the park turns into a nightmare for single mother Karla Dyson when kidnappers snatch her young son Frankie. With no cellphone and no time to wait for police, Dyson jumps into her car to follow the vehicle that holds Frankie. As the pursuit turns into a frantic, high-speed chase, Karla must risk everything and push herself to the limit to save her beloved child.

Kidnap is an action-thriller movie that was directed by Luis Prieto and written by Knate Gwaltney and stars Halle Berry, Lew Temple, Sage Correa and Chris McGinn.
