Will the 'Child's Play' Director Send Chucky to Space in Upcoming Sequel?

For horror's longest running franchises, one of the last ditch efforts to breathe life into their sequels will involve sending their characters to space. In some ways, sending your characters to space helps cement a franchise's legacy, with Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, and Leprechaun all having sent their protagonists on intergalactic excursions. Based on comments made by Child's Play creator Don Mancini, it's possibly Chucky the killer doll could be the next to explore this trend.

During an appearance on the Joe Lynch and Adam Green hosted The Movie Crypt podcast, Mancini revealed, "I have an idea for Chucky in Space." He continued, "You know how sometimes, like, kids will present a space shuttle crew with like, some totemic experiment or mascot or whatever? Chucky…Chucky in Space."

The Child's Play films themselves have often demonstrated Mancini's sense of humor, so it's entirely possible he was just going along with the joking nature of the hosts' comments, but considering the entire premise for the Child's Play franchise, we won't be surprised if Chucky terrorized a space station in the near future.

UP NEXT: Will Chucky's Son Return in 'Cult Of Chucky'?

Mancini appeared on the podcast to promote this fall's Child's Play sequel, Cult of Chucky, whose premise is as follows:

"Cult of Chucky will catch up with Nica (Fiona Dourif) at an asylum for the criminally insane where she has been confined for the past four years and is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when Nica's psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic 'tool' to facilitate his patients' group sessions — an all-too-familiar 'Good Guy' doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn't crazy after all.

"Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky's now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child's Play, races to Nica's aid. But to save her he'll have to get past Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), Chucky's long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll."

The film is written and directed by Don Mancini, who has written every single installment in the franchise, allowing the sequels to stay true to the creator's original vision for the mythology.

Although recent installments haven't been granted a theatrical release, the series remains incredibly popular, as it's both a parody of typical slasher films while also being competent installments into the genre.

Much like Mancini, Brad Dourif has been an integral part of the franchise, voicing the killer doll for all seven installments.

Cult of Chucky will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy October 3.
