During an interview with Digital Spy, Suicide Squad actor Jared Leto was quizzed about some of the imagery seen in the film and its trailers: particularly, that at times The Joker appears to have items that would belong to babies and toddlers.
Wait...does this version of The Joker kill babies?!
"There are some things that are better left to the imagination, but you know if you look closer, you'll find quite a few little toys and trinkets and items there," said Leto. "And you know, I think The Joker probably collects some things in a way -- a serial killer might keep a lock of your hair or a couple of your fingernails? Yeah, he's got a few items."
Of course, killing babies wouldn't be entirely outside of The Joker's characterization. In No Man's Land, he murders Commissioner Gordon's wife, Sarah Essen, by essentially tricking her into dropping her gun.
How? Well, having taken a nursery hostage, The Joker throws a baby into the air, so that the only way Essen could save its life would be to catch it before it hit the ground. And then, when she did, he took advantage of her distraction to kill her.
(It was never entirely clear to me whether the baby died anyway, since obviously having an adult woman collapse while holding an infant is not something that babies are particularly well-designed to protect against.)

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
