AMC's Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul may in fact be operating on a loose timeline that makes it less a prequel and more a spinoff or companion series, reports Variety.

In a move that seems likely to bring Bryan Cranston's Walter White and Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman back to the small screen, the series may jump through several decades, taking place before, during and after Breaking Bad.

Executive producer Peter Gould told The New York Daily News that the timeline for the new series is flexible.

"One of the great things about having a timeline which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before 'Breaking Bad,' during 'Breaking Bad' and after 'Breaking Bad,'" he said. "That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on 'Breaking Bad.'"

Better Call Saul was already renewed for a second season.
