Teenager Dies After Being Struck by Bullet That Fell From Sky

An Indiana teenager died from injuries after a falling bullet likely shot into the sky like a firework, struck him.

Authorities report Noah Inman, 13 of Hammond, Indiana, just west of Gary, was playing basketball with friends on July 1 when he was hit in the head by a falling bullet.

CBS News affiliate, WBBM, says Noah fell immediately to the ground as bystanders, unaware that he suffered a gunshot wound, assumed he was having a seizure and called an ambulance. The news agency reports the local hospital determined a stray bullet shot in the air by someone in a nearby community.

Airlifted to the Comer's Children's Hospital in Chicago, the teenager died Friday afternoon from his injuries.

The Hammond Police Department is currently investigating the case, but issued a statement expression their condolences to the Inman family.

"We wish you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts," they said. "Our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow. When reason fails, pray for peace. We will be praying with you."

The department reminded residents that discharging a firearm within city limits is illegal and advising anyone with information about the incident to contact Hammond police at (219) 852-2988.

A GoFundMe was created for the teen's family when he was being treated in the hospital. The family has raised more than $25,000 of its $30,000 goal.
