San Andreas sent shockwaves through its Thursday night opening with $3.1 million in ticket sales.
The Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-starring disaster movie, which will open across 3,777 theaters, is charting for a $40 million opening weekend. And with no other major releases to compete against, it is easily favored as this weekend’s box office winner.
In San Andreas, The Rock plays a helicopter pilot who must rescue his daughter, and other civilians, when the state of California is rocked by a devastating earthquake and tsunami. It is directed by Brad Peyton and also stars Paul Giamatti and Carla Gugino (Watchmen).
