It's tough to say what fans can expect from the upcoming Alien: Covenant. Director Ridley Scott has returned to the franchise, and he has said that the movie will have a similar aesthetic to the original films, but the previously-released Prometheus still has some people doubting.
Will this prequel live up to the hype of the original series?
The trailers make it seem like Covenant will be a terrifying entry that fans will enjoy, but good trailers can produce bad movies. Luckily, the folks who have now seen the film are singing its praises.
The press isn't allowed to publish any official reviews yet, but people are allowed to post their initial reactions on social media. Here's what those who attended the premiere had to say about Alien: Covenant.
Paul Shirey, editor-in-chief at JoBlo.com, had plenty of thoughts about Covenant after the premiere last night.
He claimed the movie was terrifying, bloody, mysterious - All of the things you'd want in an Alien film.
Shirey also noted that the movie was a bit of a thinker, giving fans a lot to "chew on" long after it ends.
Bloody, odd, mysterious and a staggering picture of madness at times. Horrific in unexpected ways. #AlienCovenant— Paul Shirey (@arcticninjapaul) May 4, 2017
I don’t think everyone will love Alien: Covenant. Some will probably hate it. It’s a complex film and one you’ll be talking about after.— Paul Shirey (@arcticninjapaul) May 4, 2017
Fans of the Alien franchise have been hoping for a new installment that would match the tone and essence of the original movies.
The dark, gritty, and violent aesthetic of the first two Alien movies have yet to be matched - until now.
According to multiple people in attendance, the whole movie feels like an ode to Ridley Scott's older work. Don't worry, they mean that in the best possible way.
#AlienCovenant flew by. It will please fans. Lots of classic touches, dark, gruesome at times, of course! Full review on Sunday.— Hero Collector (@HeroCollector_) May 4, 2017
Prometheus was made as a prequel to the Alien franchise, so it had plenty of world-building to do. The film had to give the Xenomorophs an origin, explain the creators of the world we already knew, and start detailing how the creatures reached Ripley's ship.
The movie did just that, but it let fans down in the process. Rather than being an action-packed adventure, with fear around every corner, it was a bit of a slow-burning think piece.
Covenant sounds like it has bridged the gap between the two.
#AlienCovenant is definitely better than Prometheus, bringing back the needed horror into the franchise. Deadly beautiful and mysterious— Jordan Samuel (@JordanESamuel) May 4, 2017
First impressions. More satisfying than Prometheus. Last act little messy re: the Aliens. Loved the cast and characters. #AlienCovenant— Aaron Percival (@_CorporalHicks) May 4, 2017
