Nothing is more uncomfortable or inconvenient than a urinary tract infection. It's not like getting a cold; you aren't about to pass it on to your coworkers or kids, so you are still expected to show up and pull your weight. Regardless of where you are or what you are doing, whether you are typing up a report for your boss, or whipping up a nutritious dinner for the family, that infection will be front and center. UTIs are a major source of distraction, pain and discomfort in women, and they can often go undetected or undiagnosed for quite a while! If you suspect that you may have contracted a urinary tract infection, go ahead and check out the most popular signs below to see if it's time to schedule an appointment with your doctor!

Dysuria: More commonly known as painful or difficult urination, dysuria is one of the most prominent symptoms of a UTI. It is usually caused by the inflammation of the urethra, which is frequently a result of an infection.

Frequent urination: Ugh, nothing is worse than constantly feeling like you have to pee — especially in the middle of the night! If you feel as if you have to urinate urgently and frequently, it may be time to schedule a visit with your physician!

Unnatural-looking urine: If you find that your pee is cloudy, strong or foul-smelling, cola-colored or even bloody, it is fairly likely that you have a UTI.

Abdominal pain: You may experience cramping, pain, or tightness in your lower abdominal region. This pressure could feel a lot like menstrual cramps, so if it's not your time of the month, you may want to get that pain checked out!

Passing small amounts of urine: In addition to the painful and constant urination, you may also find that you are only capable of passing a small amount of urine (possibly only a couple drops). This is another incredibly common symptom of a UTI!

Feeling tired or shaky: Just like any other infection or illness, a UTI is bound to affect your immune system. As a result, you will probably experience varying amounts of fatigue and shakiness, just like when you have a cold or a fever.

Mild fever: A fever of less than 101 degrees Fahrenheit may also be an indicator of a urinary tract infection. Often this mild fever could be accompanied by chills, fatigue, and general feelings of illness.

Upper back pain: If your UTI has progressed to a more serious stage and has begun to affect your kidneys, you may begin to notice upper back and side pain. This pain will usually be accompanied with a high fever, chills, nausea, and possibly even vomiting.

According to the Urology Care Foundation, urinary tract infections are responsible for more than 8.1 million visits to physician's offices every year, so keep in mind that UTIs are quite common, and very easy to treat! In fact, some women are more prone to contracting UTIs, just as some people are more likely to catch a cold. Just keep in mind that avoiding any symptoms you may be experiencing is probably the worst thing you could do, since untreated urinary tract infections can lead to kidney damage, and untreated kidney damage can be life-threatening. Have no fear, though; a simple course of antibiotics will work wonders on your infection! There's no need to take any risks with your health. If you suspect that you may be suffering from one of these bad boys, it it time to pick up the phone and call your doctor.
