Extracting your own vanilla is easier than you might think! All you need is a knife (and the vanilla bean, of course) and you'll be well on your way to making homemade vanilla bean scones. Simply slice the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and drag your knife along the bean pod to scrape off the vanilla. It will build up on the blade of your knife, so carefully wipe it off and you're all set!
Note: Extracted vanilla beans should not be used in place of the liquid form of vanilla extract. The bean is more potent than the liquid extract you would buy at the grocery store. Use vanilla bean when you want to see the brown vanilla specks in a recipe or when you're looking for a strong vanilla flavor.
When you've extracted the vanilla from both sides of the pod, let the pods dry out. Once they've dried completely, grind them up and use the powder in baked goods like doughs and batters for an added vanilla kick.
