Every Pirates of the Caribbean Character That Returns In 'Dead Men Tell No Tales'
It's once again 'a pirate's life' for audiences, as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No [...]
The Usual Suspects
Besides Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, there are certain characters who appear in every Pirates film, and naturally, they're back again.
The most obvious returning regular is Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), who appears in Dead Men Tell No Tales as a pirate lord, living the fancy life, with a horde of ships at his command. When Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), invades the seas and starts wiping out Barbossa's ships, Hector strikes an accord with the ghost to track down Jack Sparrow. Of course, upon finding Jack, Barbossa double-crosses Salazar and uses Blackbeard's sword to restore the shrunken Black Pearl to full size. The big twist comes when Barbossa learns that Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) is actually his long-lost daughter. When Carina is put in peril while escaping from Salazar, Barbossa sacrifices himself to save her. As far as we know, Hector is dead.
The other returning "usual suspects" are Jack's unsavory crew of derilects, which include Gibbs (Kevin McNally), little man Marty (Martin Klebba) and recent addition, Scrum (Stephen Graham). In this installment, the boys mutiny against Jack because he has no ship, money, or prospects left. However, when they find out the Black Pearl is restored, they become Captain Sparrow's crew once more. Of course, they're none too pleased when they discover that Jack has duped them into searching for a treasure (Poseidon's Trident) that won't pay them much...
prevnextMullroy & Murtogg
Comedic duo Mullroy (Angus Barnett) and Murtogg (Giles New) started as guards of the HMS Incerceptor in the first Pirates movie, but when Jack stole the ship, they began a long strange career change.
The left the Royal Navy and worked for the East India Trading Company, guarding Davy Jones' Dead Man's Chest - which Jack also stole. They eventually came aboard The Black Pearl, doing a full turn to a life of piracy.
When we catch up with Mullroy and Murtogg in Dead Men Tell no Tales, the pair are part of Hector Barbossa's pirate network, serving as his right (and left) hand men, aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge.
Unfortunately, time and experience haven't made them any smarter.
prevnextHenry Turner
We first met Henry at the end of At World's End when he was nine years old, waiting with his mother, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) to meet his father Will (Orlando Bloom) when on the one day, every decade, that Will is allowed to leave The Flying Dutchman and step on shore.
In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Henry returns first as a young boy, who throws himself beneath the sea to find his father, vowing to free him. Most of the film follows Henry as a young man (Brendon Thwaites), embarking on the adventure to find Poseidon's Trident, which can wipe out any every sea curse ever made.
In the end, Captain Salazar uses the Trident to free himself from a ghostly existence - which in turn frees Will Turner from his service aboard The Dutchman. With his family reunited, Henry is able to live happily with his new love, Carina Barbossa (Kaya Sodelario).
prevnextWill Turner
Will Turner first met Captain Jack Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl, when his life as a blacksmith was upended entirely. It turned out that Will was the son of a pirate named "Bootstrap" Bill Turner, and his blood was the key ending the curse upon Captain Barbossa and his undead crew.
After his adventure with Jack, Will became a pirate, and eventually married his love, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). However, when Davy Jones returned looking for vengeance, Will discovered his father Bill was trapped aboard Jones' ship. In the end, Will was mortally wounded by Jones, but saved by Jack when Jack used Will's hand to pierce Davy Jones' heart. Will then became captain of The Flying Dutchman, cursed to ferry the dead for all eternity. Before he left, he fathered a child, Henry, with Elizabeth.
In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Will is freed from his curse on The Dutchman by Henry, and returns home to Elizabeth and his son, to live happily ever after. Or so it seems...
prevnextElizabeth Swann Turner
Elizabeth Swann was a governor's daughter, who got caught up in Jack Sparrow's adventure in Curse of the Black Pearl, by wearing the enchanted medallion of childhood crush, Will Turner.
Several adventures with Jack and Will made Elizabeth realize that she was not suited form the prim and proper world of high society, and was instead a wilder sort of woman - one perfectly suited to a pirate, like Will Turner. She even became a pirate lord, after Sao Feng (Chow-Yun Fat) passed his title onto her.
After helping Jack and Will defeat the Royal Armada, Elizabeth married will, and gave birth to their son, Henry. She protected Will's heart in the Dead Man's Chest, until her love finally returned to her, nearly two decades later.
Now, Will and Elizabeth are home, happy, and safe... or are they?
prevnext*Davy Jones
We don't actually see Davy Jones return in Dead Men Tell No Tales, per se, but a post-credits scene features Will and Elizabeth Turner asleep in bed, when they get a visit from a creepy individual, who comes lumbering into their room.
Will wakes from his sleep thinking he's had a nightmare about Jones, and is coaxed back to sleep by Elizabeth. However, as the camera pans down, we see that there are definite signs that Day Jones has returned!
Presumably, when Poseidon's Trident ends every curse on the sea, Will Turner is freed from Captaining the Flying Dutchman - and because The Dutchman is a force of nature, and must therefore always exist, it stands to reason that its mythical commander, Jones, would be resurrected.
What Jones' return means for Jack, Will and Elizabeth remains to be seen - but it's not a good sign.
